“No le desearía a ni a mi peor enemigo lo que siento en estos momentos”, dice ucraniana viviendo en Puerto Rico

Margaryta Kret, quien es una “ucraniana orgullosa” que actualmente reside en Puerto Rico, expresó mediante una carta que obtuvo RADIO ISLA cómo se siente en momentos en que su país natal, Ucrania, atraviesa el sexto día desde que inició la invasión rusa. Kret lleva viviendo unos cinco años en la isla. 

Kret narró lo que están viviendo sus familiares que se encuentran a las afueras de la capital de Ucrania, Kyiv, y manifestó que los rusos no podrán controlar a los ucranianos aunque tomen control de esa ciudad. Además, Kret reiteró la “verdadera razón” por la que el presidente de Rusia, Vladimir Putin, los quiere.

“Yo no le desearía ni a mi peor enemigo, lo que siento en estos momentos: preocupación por mi familia, miedo de que no vuelva a ver a mis padres y mis mejores amigos, 000 de que no estoy allí con ellos ahora mismo, asco hacia (Vladimir) Putin, desprecio hacia todos los que siguen su comando, impotencia, ira (y) desesperación.    

Una cosa que yo quiero clarificarle a todos: esto no es un ‘conflicto’, ‘operación militar’ o ‘operación pacífica’ que el régimen de Putin ha estado llamando. Es una guerra que inició Rusia contra Ucrania hace 8 años cuando anexaron Crimea, destruyeron la región de Donbas (que incluye algunos de las ciudades ucranianas más grandes de Donetsk y Lugansk) y cómo ahora las manos sangrientas de Putin vinieron por más. Ahora él (Putin) lo quiere todo. Todas sus excusas para intentar justificar este crimen en contra de la humanidad son disparates. No tiene nada que ver con la OTAN (NATO, por sus siglas en inglés) o el que Putin se siente amenazado por ello. Estoy segura que muchas personas recuerdan su ridículo ensayo publicado el verano pasado, básicamente reclamando que Ucrania no es un país real y no tiene una verdadera cultura, idioma y patrimonio. Bueno, esto podría ser una sorpresa para él, que nuestra hermosa capital, Kyiv (sí, es Kyiv, no ‘Kiev’ como le han llamado los rusos todo este tiempo) tiene más de 1,500 años, mientras que Moscú sólo tiene aproximadamente 870 años. Mi abuela enseñó el idioma y literatura ucraniana por casi 50 años y, ahora que está retirada, aún ofrece tutorías. ¿Entonces qué idioma ella ha estado enseñado si no existe, según el régimen de Putin? Todas las tradiciones navideñas ucranianas hermosas, nuestras costumbres y supersticiones graciosas, nuestra gastronomía, múltiples festividades que no se observan en otras partes que en mi patria, etc… Todo esto nos hace ucranianos y estamos orgullosos de nuestro patrimonio, de nuestra historia extensa y raíces antiguas, que datan de miles de años.       

La verdad es que solo hay una razón por la que Putin nos quiere y ahora: él odia que somos independientes, una nación orgullosa y odia que nos estamos moviendo hacia el mundo occidental y civilización occidental muy rápido. ¡Estamos tomando dirección hacia el occidente, por nuestra cuenta! No porque ‘América nos está obligando’, como la propaganda rusa lo ha estado clamando. Nosotros tomamos esta decisión en 1991, cuando salimos de la Unión Soviética (USSR, por sus siglas en inglés) y la reafirmamos en el 2014 cuando desplazamos a nuestro presidente Yanukovich que era pro Rusia, porque intentó ser un dictador como Putin. La nación ucraniana se enfrentó a él y ahora estamos obligados a enfrentarnos a una bestia más grande. 

Nuestra historia data desde Kyiv Rus, cuando Kyiv ya era un enorme, importante, próspero y centro cultural y nadie aún no ha escuchado de Moscú. 

Además, tomemos en cuenta que ucranianos y rusos tenemos trasfondos muy diferentes en términos de raíces y patrimonio. Ya que a Putin le gusta tanto hablar de historia y se cree que son la grandeza rusa y que (nosotros) somos su rama sin verdadera nación, mentalidad, cultura y patrimonio (él literalmente llamó a los ucranianos múltiples veces ‘rusos pequeños’. No estoy bromeando), pues aquí está la sorpresa para él: el territorio contemporáneo de Ucrania, hace miles de años, fue habitado por tribus eslavas, mientras que el territorio contemporáneo ruso fue habitado por otras completamente diferentes (mayormente turcas y finlandesas). Por lo tanto, somos dos naciones diferentes y la historia ucraniana es bien real y bien rica. La cosa más importante que el mundo tiene que entender (y creo que por fin se están dando cuenta) es que Putin está usando ‘excusa OTAN’, ‘excusa patrimonial’ (y) ‘excusa somos países hermanos’ para invadirnos, porque él quiere devorarnos y poner su nombre en la historia. La verdadera razón por la cual él inició la guerra en nuestras tierras y está matando a ucranianos ahora, es porque él odia el hecho de que somos un país independiente que nuestra gente es LIBRE. Tenemos libertad de expresión, somos libres para ver las noticias que escojamos ver, somos libres para elegir quien queramos para gobernar nuestro país, nuestras redes sociales no son censuradas y nos estamos moviendo e integrando al mundo occidental a una rápida velocidad. Es peligroso para él tener un vecino donde la gente es libre, educada, tiene derechos humanos y dignidad, porque será difícil para él mantener su poder absoluto y dictadura. En Rusia, las noticias son censuradas, las personas son sancionadas por hablar en contra de Putin, la oposición es asesinada (Boris Nemtsov fue baleado hasta la muerte en la Plaza Roja). ¡Es terror! Ucrania tomó su decisión más importante en su historia moderna en 1991 cuando salimos de la Unión Soviética. Tomamos esta decisión nuevamente cuando desplazamos a nuestro presidente pro Rusia, Yanukovich. Nosotros elegimos el curso de nuestra nación, curso DEMOCRÁTICO, por nuestra cuenta y por nuestra voluntad y poder. Y él lo odia. Esa es la verdadera razón por la que está intentando aplastarnos ahora.        

Y, si ahora hasta Suiza abandonó su famosa ‘política de neutralidad’ y sancionó a Rusia, pues es bien claro que solamente Putin, su círculo que le tiene terror, y su gente que solo les muestra las noticias que sus medios están inventando, aún creen en su misión. Aunque imaginemos el peor escenario en el que Putin logra conquistar Kyiv e instala su régimen marioneta allí, creeme que aprenderá bien rápido que los ucranianos los derrocaremos en 5 minutos. Nunca nos someteremos.  

Para eso, necesitamos ayuda mundial. Ya no es solamente la pelea por Ucrania. Ahora es la pelea por la democracia, civilización occidental, derechos humanos y dignidad. Todos tenemos que enfrentarnos a un acosador, porque no va a terminar en Ucrania. Él (Putin) le ha hecho esto a países vecinos más pequeños anteriormente y ahora nos lo está tratando de hacer a nosotros. La mejor comparación que puedo compararlo, es como cuando un hombre horrible que violó a una mujer y entonces la está obligando a casarse con él y amarlo. ¡Es imposible! Ucrania es una nación que ama la libertad. Él JAMÁS podrá someternos. Él nos puede herir, pero nunca nos convertirá en rusos.  

Mi hermana y su hija de 9 años han estado refugiadas en el sótano de su condominio por cinco días ya, a las afueras de Kyiv. De hecho, mi sobrina celebró su noveno cumpleaños allí, en un sótano sin calor en febrero, a los sonidos de helicópteros, rondas y misiles sobre su cabeza, en vez de la canción Cumpleaños Feliz.     

Mi corazón quiere estar en Ucrania en ese sótano con mi familia, o peleando en contra de Putin junto a los hombres y mujeres valientes en las calles. Pero todo lo que puedo hacer ahora mismo es divulgar la verdad y pedirle a todos ustedes que me ayuden. ¡Ucrania no atacó a nadie! Estamos tratando de defender nuestras tierras, nuestro patrimonio, nuestras vidas y nuestra opción. Putin está tratando de invadir Ucrania. Él también está apuntando objetos de civiles. Hay muchas casas, condominios y hasta hospitales que han sido impactados y destruidos por monstruos rusos. Es desgarrador y necesitamos la ayuda de todos para detener al (Adolfo) Hitler del siglo 21, el señor Putin, porque ahora somos nosotros, pero mañana pueden ser ustedes”, lee la misiva escrita originalmente en inglés.

“I would not wish on my worst enemy to feel what I’m feeling right now: worry for my family, fear that I might not see my parents and my best friends again, guilt that I am not there with them right now, disgust towards Putin, despise towards everyone who follows his command, helplessness, anger, despair.

One thing that I want to clarify for everyone: this is not a “conflict”, “military operation” or “peacemaking mission” that the Putin regime has been calling it. It is a war that Russia started in Ukraine 8 years ago, when they annexed Crimea, destroyed Donbas region (with some of the biggest Ukrainian cities of Donetsk and Lugansk) and now Putin’s bloody hands came for more. Now he wants it all. All his excuses to try to justify this crime against humanity are nonsense. It has nothing to do with NATO or Putin feeling “threatened” by it. I’m sure a lot of people remember his laughable essay that he published last summer, basically claiming Ukraine is not a real country and has no real culture, language and heritage. Well this might come as a surprise to him that our beautiful capital Kyiv (yes, it is Kyiv, not “Kiev” like russians have been calling it all this time) is more than 1500 years old, while Moscow is only about 870 years old. My grandmother taught Ukrainian language and literature for almost 50 years, and now that she is retired she is still tutoring. So what language has she been teaching, if it doesn’t exist, according to the Putin regime? All the beautiful Ukrainian Christmas traditions, our customs and funny superstitions, our cuisine, multiple holidays that are not observed anywhere else but in my Homeland, etc. All this is making us Ukrainian, and we are very proud of our heritage, of our long history and ancient roots, dating back thousands of years. 

The truth is there is only one reason Putin wants us, and he wants us now: he hates that we are an independent, proud nation and he hates that we are drifting towards western world and western civilization really fast. And we are taking western direction by our own choice! Not because “America is making us”, like Russian propaganda has been claiming it. We made this choice back in 1991, when we exited the USSR. And we made this choice again in 2014, when we ousted our pro-russian President Yanukovich, because he tried to be a dictator like Putin. The Ukrainian nation stood up to him, and now we are forced to stand up to a much bigger beast.

Our history is dating back to Kyiv Rus, when Kyiv was already a huge and important prosperous and cultural hub, and nobody’s even heard of Moscow yet. 

Also please note that Ukrainians and Russians have very different backgrounds in terms of roots and heritage. Since Putin likes to talk about history so much, and he believes they are a grandeur Russia and we are just their offshoot with no real nation, mentality, culture and heritage (he literally called Ukrainians, multiple times, “little russians”!! I am not kidding) well here’s the surprise for him: contemporary territory of Ukraine thousands of years ago got inhabited by Slavic tribes, while contemporary Russian territory was inhabited by completely different ones (mostly Turks and Finnish). So we ARE two different nations, and Ukrainian history is very real and very rich. The most important thing that the world needs to understand (and I believe they finally start realizing it) is that Putin is using “NATO excuse”, “heritage excuse”, “we are brotherly countries excuse” to invade us, because he wants to devour us and make his name in history. The real reason that he started a war on our land and is killing Ukrainian people now is that he hates the fact that we are an independent country and our people are FREE. We have freedom of speech, we are free to watch whatever news we choose to watch, we are free to elect whoever we want to elect to govern our country, our social media does not get censored, and we are moving and integrating into western world at a very high speed. It is dangerous for him to have a neighbor where people are free, educated, have human rights and dignity – because it will be difficult for him to keep his absolute power and dictatorship. In Russia news are censored, people get punished for speaking up against Putin, opposition gets murdered (Boris Nemtsov right on the Red Square was shot dead), it’s a terror! Ukraine made the most important choice in its modern history in 1991 when we exited the USSR. We made this choice again in 2014 when we ousted our pro Russian President Yanukovich. We chose the course of our nation, DEMOCRACY course, ourselves and at our own will and power. And he hates it. So that is a real reason he is trying to crush us now. 

And if by now even Switzerland abandoned their world famous “Swiss neutrality” policy and sanctioned Russia, then it is very clear that only Putin, his circle who is terrified of him, and his people that he is feeding to them only the “news” that his media is making up, still believes in his mission. Even if we imagine the worst case scenario where Putin does take over Kyiv and installs his puppet regime there, believe me, he will learn very fast that Ukrainian people will overthrow it in 5 minutes. We will never ever be subdued.

For that we need global help. It is not about the fight for Ukraine anymore. Now it is the fight for democracy, western civilization, human rights and dignity. We all need to stand up to a bully. Because he will not stop in Ukraine. He has done this to smaller neighboring countries before, and now he is trying to do it to us. Best comparison I can come up with, it’s like a horrible man who raped a woman , and then he is making her marry him and love him. It is impossible! Ukraine is a freedom loving nation, he will never EVER be able to subdue us. He can hurt us, but he will never make us Russian.

My sister and her 9 year old daughter have been sheltering in the basement of her condo for five days now, just outside of Kyiv. In fact my niece has just celebrated her 9th birthday there – in a cold basement with no heat in February, to the sounds of helicopters, rounds and missiles over her head, instead of the “Happy Birthday” song. 

My heart wants to be in Ukraine in that basement with my family, or fighting against Putin together with our brave Men and Women in the street. But all I can do right now is spread the truth, and ask all of you to help me – Ukraine did not attack anybody! We are trying to protect our own land, our heritage, our lives and our choice. Putin is trying to invade Ukraine, he is targeting civilian objects too! There are many houses, condos and even hospitals that have been fired at and destroyed by Russian monsters. It is heart wrenching. And we need everyone’s help to push back Hitler of the 21st century – mister Putin. Because today it’s us, but tomorrow it can be you”.
